The Gift of You

By Dee Ann Ludwig

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The only gift is a portion of one's self.” And that's what these twelve gifts are--gifts of you. They cost nothing, but are some of the most precious presents you can give to your friends and family. Their effects can last a lifetime.

The Gift of Time
In our busy world, the phrase “I don't have time to...” has become a universal complaint. Like a growing plant, any relationship between two people can thrive only if it receives care. Most human relationships profit from a simple tonic that is called “tincture of time.” A chatty phone call to an unhappy friend or a half-hour visit to an aunt who lives alone can mean a lot, but costs very little.

The Gift of Good Example
Most people learn fundamental attitudes and behavior by observing others. Be a good example by handling difficult situations in a mature manner.

The Gift of Acceptance
Many problems between husbands and wives or between friends begin when one person tries to change the other to fit preconceived notions. But did you know that often people begin to shed bad habits once they are accepted the way they are?

The Gift of Seeing the Best in People
When we expect people to respond in a positive way, they usually do.

The Gift of Giving Up a Bad Habit
All of us have habits that annoy those we love. What a great gift it would be if you could give up an unpleasant or unhealthy habit.

The Gift of Teaching
Helping someone you love learn something new is an important investment in their future happiness. Sharing our talents with others is a good way to show our love.

The Gift of Listening
Few of us know how to listen effectively. Too often we interrupt or act disinterested when someone else is talking.

The Gift of Fun
There are people who “wet blanket” the happiness of those around them, while others lead people into finding fun in ordinary events.

The Gift of Letting Others Give
When we let others give to us, and when we accept their gifts in a gracious manner, we may be giving them one of the most important gifts of all.

The Gift of Privacy
Too often we tend to smother those we love with questions and demands on their time. Each of us has a need for companionship and a need for privacy. Relinquish some of your natural curiosity occasionally and give those you love the right to private thoughts and unshared feelings.

The Gift of Self-Esteem
It's hard to resist the temptation to give unwanted or unnecessary advice and help to those we love. Such advice may unwittingly cripple a person's self-esteem. A Chinese proverb proclaims, “There's nothing more blessed on earth than a mother--but there's nothing more blessed in Heaven than a mother who knows when to let go of the hand.”

The Gift of Self-Disclosure
Relationships can either grow and expand, or become stale and decline. Self-disclosure--letting someone else discover more about you--can turn a wilting relationship into a flourishing one. It can also help sustain an already healthy friendship or marriage. Bottling up feelings, resentments and hopes is not only unhealthy, it also deprives others of truly knowing who you are.

New Year's Resolution Mania

Resolution or Broken Promise?

Do you groan when you think about making a New Year Resolution?
If so, you are probably not alone.
It has been suggested that about 1/3 of New Year Resolutions are broken by the end of January and 80% over all. Forbes Magazine has an even dimmer outlook, saying that only 8% of people achieve their New Year’s Resolution.
Chances are, quite a few folks make a New Year’s Resolution to begin with solely because it is  the thing to do. It’s a very politically correct action this time of year.
If those success rates are true ( and I think they come pretty close) then obviously something isn't working so well.
You can read all sorts of strategies about how to stick to your resolution, how to overcome your bad habits, how to turn over a new leaf, etc. etc. until you want to move to a desert island where no one will be asking you what your resolution was and if you stuck to it.
Maybe that is why when I was a little girl I thought February was the worst month of the year. It usually didn’t snow any more, so that was no fun, I thought, but it still was so cold, grey and dreary. Maybe what was really happening was all those broken resolutions were floating around in the atmosphere releasing bad vibes!
So this New Year, instead of making a resolution that chances are, will get broken relatively quickly and leave you with a feeling of failure, why not try something different? What about simply trying something new or change something in your life! It can be as simple as you want, or elaborate and challenging.

Why Change Is Good

  • One of the 7 signs of life is movement so in essence, change is a sign of life.
  • Without change, things stay the same until they stagnate and die.
  • Change brings adventure into our life.
  • Change forces us outside our comfort zone and helps us grow.
  • Resisting change is harder work than embracing it. What goes up, must come down. Change is a natural force of nature and it’s better to flow with it than resist it.
  • Doing something new and different will help make you more flexible.
  • It can be encouraging to know that if you wait long enough, most things will change. However, being able to initiate a change yourself instead of waiting for it to just happen can help you find solutions earlier on.

How to Stay Inspired Every Day.

Life is made up of the little things. One step at a time.

I was watching a movie with a well known, successful actor. I noticed that he was a master of subtle facial expressions. Sometimes they were so subtle that you hardly noticed them--a twitch of the eye, a small sigh, a slight shrug of the shoulders. I wonder if he practices these movements or, because in his head he is becoming the character, if those movements are just part of him that he does almost subconsciously?

But the point is that they are very, very small things, each one on its own. Often, you don't even notice the actual movement but you get the message it portrays. You know he is actually sad, even though he is smiling or you know he is nervous and doing his best to hide it. That is the essence of great acting--it is built on tiny but important movements.

So is our life built on tiny steps. Each day we need to renew our inspiration and it doesn't have to be a big long process. It can start with a simple smile and kind word first thing in the morning. You will find when you give out happiness, it has a way of returning back to you! Or think a happy thought, no matter how bad you might feel. If you like to sing, try singing a happy song! Often, when I do this, before I know it, I don't even remember what it was that was getting me down--by singing an uplifting song, I am propelled into a positive mood!

There are many steps you can take, to help you to be more positive and inspired. Then, with that kind of mindset you can tackle problems or difficulties and come up with real solutions. If you try to tackle problems when you are un-inspired it will most likely be a downward spiral.

I also recommend you read the Mottos of Success calender. There is one quote per day, for every day of the year. You can start your day with a positive and inspirational thought that you can meditate on throughout the day, to help you stay inspired and to be successful.
